abstract:Cross-field is one of the biggest problem of our ‘science geeks’ group. Born to learn the electrics but clumsy in learning the MGT knowledge. The way to learn the things we never touch before is a difficult way. We try to learn it using the original way that we used to do in our science study, but…there is no lab session, neither the formula for us to study the principle of the theory, just words, paragraph, and…stories. Stories, yes stories, that is where we make breakthrough, and that is the only things we are similar with. We read stories first, and tell stories to each other, and try to figure out some analysis by ourselves, then compare to the analysis with the writer’s, we learn it in a dramatic fast speed. To be honest, we did first begin with some ‘concrete’ aspect each people, then share the idea of each part, and then combine them together and sturdy others parts. We know it is not the best way but it is the fastest way for us to cross the threshold of the different area which we never touched for 20 years. Later, we begin to read all aspect of the reading, and try to grasp some idea and key theory to the point, then, we made it.We have two main tool to work this out, reading&sharing and applying with real world
The reason we want to take the MGT course is that we do not want to become a science geek that only knows about the lab and experiment. We want to become a comprehensive talent that knows management knowledge as well.MGT was a subject that full of science and art. Just like our math, management is going to be a rigorous subject that can help a manager to manage the routine business with a scientific way. Put the finite energy into the mature system can save a lot of time.
No matter what we learned before, just like our telecommunication or electrics, we have to do the management job some day, so that we to grasp the concept of management, the way of thinking which will benefit all our life.
When we first involve the ocean of MGT, we are confused about the concept of MGT, what is that mean? Why we have to do like this, how did they come out with such idea? Just like our first assignment, we mainly focus on how to and what kind of the ‘real’ object has to be made which lead us into a round conner that prove we are still not a management guys. What kind of problem we have? The most important part is that we treat MGT an BRAND NEW theory that we have to study all over again from the very first beginning. BUT the fact is that some aspect are the same and we can draw lesson from our own subject. When I talk to my guys, hey I’ve read a paper which said the core theory concept is coherent with the way you thinking, which means By knowing one method you will know all, you will feel just like a fish in water.By then we found that, in some aspect, our subject is some kind of similar to the MGT. Say, we need to learn and understand the theory of science, and MGT tell us to learn and understand a way of thinking. For example, when we do experiment on optical communication, we need to find out what is the difference between each part, but in MGT we need to find out what is the difference between management and other subject. It is the way of thinking that differ from other subject. For instance, when we saw an African wear now shoes, the socialist will say: why this place so poor, there must be some problem in politics and economic. The historian will discuss: what kind of history reason or allusion that makes them keep this custom? Geographer might willing to find out the reason course by geography. BUT, a manager will find it will be a nice market and a nice opportunity to explore this market after investigation and analyzation.
By investigate the reading and analyze, we found out the most important part for us to learn this subject quickly. To grasp the core concept and do sufficient analyzation.
So this came out another tool we used, reading, continuously reading, and sharing to each others, this is a fastest way for us green-hand guys to involve in this misery subject as quick as possible. Here I gonna share some famous remark.
Drucker: A man who knows the theory of management but do not have the management tool will still be able to become a first-class manager. But in contract, a man who only knows the skills and tools but do not understand the theory of management will never be a manager but a technician.
Simon: What management focus is the boundary of the rational and irrational in the social activity of a human being. Thus, an outstanding manager will take care of both of: first, be able to use the suitable but simple and direct method to manage stuff; second, these method will not make extra bear on his way of thinking or destroy the feeling he used to have.
Stephen P. Robbins once told us, do not even hope to become a successful manager by learning from a manage course.
Below is how we do reading according to the field we do not know.
First we read extensively so that we may be able to know the idea of each chapter. Just like an foreigner first come to HK, he should buy a map of HK, find out where is the central of HK and what is the distribution of each road and MTR, so that he will not try to find CityU in New territory. Lack the ability to grasp the ‘whole’ view of a chapter will be like a man strain at a gnat and swallow a camel.
second, after the extensively reading, we have to read the key concept more carefully, try to understand the basic theory of each chapter.
Last but not least, try to UNDERSTAND the real story behind this theory and try to APPLY this theory in the real world(which will be the second part we will discuss later).The whole process can be describe like ‘whole concept- separate idea- whole theory’ , find out the framework for each chapter and try to grasp the key point of each slide.
For example, in the chapter of negotiation, the core concept is to achieve a win-win negotiation, first we have to grasp the criteria of the meaning of win-win cooperation, that is the whole concept, then we have to discuss about the difference between a win-win negotiation and a normal negotiation, and how difference style of negotiation works and what is their pros and cons, and at last we have to come out more deeper among culture, history or other aspect.
Another example, in the chapter of Trust and its role in collaborations, The first thing we have to catch is that what is trust, by understanding the definition of this word then we have to move on more concrete aspect such why is it so import and in groups, and what area can trust plays an important role in, and the reason of low trust, at last when we know how important trust is and we come out an idea that we’d better to maintain the trust because it is hard to regaining the trust again.
Extra reading will be another way to learn the new things. By learning from the chapter, we have to use this theory,because management is easy to use in the real life than other subject that need to be proof before using. Analyzing some real case can help us digest and memory the things we learned.
First of all we have to thanks for professor Frank, thanks for his presentation each class that is relate to our daily life that benefit us more than the words itself. Enlightened by Professor Frank, we are able to come out a ‘four word tips’ at last. To Learn, to Do, to Think, to Realize. Learn, what we discuss from the class, and learn from the extra reading. To Do: the aim of what we Learn is to use it in real life, so Do it in our life an experience the real management, for example, in our second assignment, we really do the things we learn from the class, we build a open-discuss group with one leader, and we trust each other and try to grasp the core concept we need to do and we have a well designed standard to increase our team performance and it works. To Think, Learning without thought is labor lost, thinking can make people Do better.To realize:keep pace with the time and advance with the times,realize we have to Learn-Do-Think-Realize-Learn again to do things better.
